ABP Food Group wanted a way to showcase the sustainability best practice happening across their 21 beef processing sites in the UK and Ireland, and also a way to harness the knowledge and innovation of their employees – turning their fresh sustainability ideas into everyday practice.
Anthesis worked with ABP to manage the organisation of a ‘Stand up for sustainability’ competition and best practice sharing day in Autumn 2015. We guided ABP through the event and competition planning process, keeping the project on track through regular meetings and advice on ways to maximise participation in the competition and day.
’Stand up for sustainability’ was an engaging initiative to collect new and exciting ideas to help ABP to become more sustainable. The competition spanned several weeks and was promoted through posters, internal social media, and a microsite; each site also received a guidance pack to equip them with the detail needed to promote the competition and engage site sustainability ambassadors. Staff could either enter the competition online or via a paper form – whatever was easiest. All competition entries were then evaluated, and the four best selected to reach the competition final, held at the best practice sharing event itself.
On the event day, sites took it in turns to exhibit their site’s best practice and unashamedly steal colleagues’ ideas to implement at their own sites. The day was a roaring success, with site pledges exceeding £600K of resource benefit with over half of this already being delivered three months after the event.
Testimonials from ABP attendees:
“…I thought I would get maybe an idea or two out of today to take back to the business. But in reality I have a full two pages to crack on with on numerous projects, which both excites me and makes me really quite proud to be a part of the event today… Sharing our ideas and best practice will allow us to pick up the pace, communicate and demonstrate to our customers clearly we are ahead of the pack and take the battle to our competition… One word - inspired!!”
“The format of the day was spot on with a very positive response from all. Thanks & I look forward to spreading the word & to implement a couple of really good ideas that we poached from yesterday.”
We have worked with ABP on a number projects now – including writing their sustainability communications strategy, creating a “newsreel” (an animated and editable PowerPoint to promote their sustainability progress), and written case studies too.
